Pialba-Burrum Heads Road Intersection Upgrade, Hervey Bay, Qld

Recently the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) undertook a $26M upgrade of the Pialba-Burrum Heads Road intersection. The project objective was to improve safety and increase capacity during peak times. A key part of the safety upgrade was the installation of centre medians to separate traffic.

Project Design Brief

Designers incorporated some super elevated road sections to follow the natural topography of the site. This restricted the shoulder widths of the carriageway and therefore a continuous capture inlet drainage system was required to ensure all run off could be removed effectively.

ACO's Solution

  • KerbDrain QK200SM
  • ACO’s Technical Services team assisted designers with hydraulic performance data of the system, including slot intake capacities

Benefits

  • KerbDrain transforms kerbs into continuous capture inlets requiring minimal excavation
  • KerbDrain’s compact design fits neatly in the shoulder of the carriageway
  • The 500mm length allowed for easy installation around the curved medians
  • Installing KerbDrain reduced the cost compared to conventional kerb inlet drainage, due to fewer pits and pipes resulting in less excavation
